Case Study 2 - Find a Therapist App

The product:
Your Place is an app that matches you with a therapist, based on focus areas and then helps you to schedule appointments.
Project Duration
October 2022 - August 2023

The problem: People would like to schedule appointments online with a therapist without going to an office.
The goal: Design an app that allows you to find a therapist and book appointments with them.
My role: UX designer designing an app for Therapist Scheduling app from conception to delivery.
Responsibilities: Conducting interviews, paper and digital wireframing, low and high-fidelity prototyping, conducting usability studies, accounting for accessibility, and iterating on designs
User Research Summary
I conducted interviews and created empathy maps to understand the users I’m designing for and their needs. A primary user group identified through research was working people who would like to work through improving their lives. This user group confirmed initial assumptions about the Therapist Scheduling app, but research also revealed that some users were ready to find a therapist and schedule an appointment but others wanted more information.

Mapping Matt's use of the tool showed that he would need a confirmation to know that he had scheduled an appointment.

Starting the Design
Paper wireframes
● Digital wireframes

● Usability
Paper Wire Frame
Taking the time to draft iterations of each screen of the app on paper ensured that the elements that made it to digital wireframes would be well-suited to address user pain points. A form was setup for the next step in the process.

Digital Wire Frame
As the initial design phase continued, I made sure to base screen designs on feedback and findings from the user research. This button at the top of the home screen show how to find more information. This button provides an easy way to get matched to a therapist.
Lo Fidelity Prototype
Using the completed set of digital wireframes, I created a lowfidelity prototype. The primary user flow I connected was taking the user to the screen to answer questions to match with a therapist.

Usability Study: Findings
I conducted two rounds of usability studies. Findings from the first study helped guide the designs from wireframes to mockups. The second study used a high-fidelity prototype and revealed what aspects of the mockups needed refining.
Refining the Design

● Accessibility
Mockups
Early designs allowed for some customization, but after the usability studies, I eliminated some contact and used a visual to make a point. I also revised the design so users see all the customization options when they first land on the screen.

The second usability study revealed frustration with the crowded page. I split up the “Meet Your Therapist” screen. Have a separate screen for insurance and another screen for the calendar to improve the flow.

The final high-fidelity prototype presented cleaner user flows for finding more information and matching with a therapist.
